Wind / Hybrid Renewable Energy

Wind and hybrid renewable-energy system engineering integrating wind generation with solar, storage, grid, gensets and industrial load controls.

What It Is

A wind or hybrid renewable-energy system combines one or more generation sources—typically wind and solar—with storage, grid connection, thermal or engine backup and an energy management system. The objective may be energy cost control, resilience, diesel displacement, capacity support or lower emissions. Bankable design requires site-specific wind measurement, terrain and wake analysis as well as electrical and control studies.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial sites with suitable measured wind resource
  • Remote operations using diesel generation
  • Wind-plus-solar systems with complementary production profiles
  • Microgrids requiring storage and dispatch control
  • Grid-connected plants subject to export and power-quality limits

Process Flow and Energy Architecture

1. Resource and load measurementWind, solar, load, grid and fuel data are collected at compatible time resolution.
2. Site and constraint studyTerrain, access, geotechnical, aviation, environmental and electrical constraints are screened.
3. Hybrid optimizationGeneration, storage and backup sizes are evaluated against dispatch objectives and uncertainty.
4. Electrical and civil designFoundations, roads, collection network, substation, protection and communications are coordinated.
5. EMS integrationForecasting, curtailment, state-of-charge and backup dispatch rules are implemented.
6. Construction and commissioningTurbines, PV, BESS and grid interfaces are tested individually and as one system.
7. Performance monitoringAvailability, energy balance, wake losses, curtailment and asset condition are trended.

The hybrid architecture is governed by the energy management system but protected by independent equipment and grid relays. Dispatch logic covers normal operation, weak-grid conditions, loss of grid, black start where required, low-resource periods and maintenance outages.

Main Equipment and System Architecture

  • Wind turbines selected for the verified wind class and site conditions
  • Meteorological mast or lidar and resource-monitoring equipment
  • Solar PV arrays where included
  • Battery energy storage and PCS where included
  • MV collection system, transformers, switchgear and substation
  • Plant power controller, EMS, SCADA and forecasting interface
  • Civil foundations, roads, crane pads, communications and grid metering

Architecture may be AC-coupled or use coordinated plant controllers across separate generation assets. Protection selectivity, reactive-power capability, ramp-rate control, curtailment and cybersecurity responsibilities are defined at the point of connection.

Capacity and Design Basis

Sizing is based on measured or appropriately corrected wind data, hub-height profile, turbulence, terrain, wake losses, equipment power curves, solar resource where included, time-series load, grid constraints and the required resilience objective.

Demand profile Hourly and seasonal load, operating schedule, peak events and future expansion are confirmed from measured or customer-approved data.
Resource basis Wind assessment must establish measurement period, sensor quality, long-term correction, shear, turbulence, extreme wind, air density and uncertainty. Modeled data alone is identified as preliminary until validated.
Grid interface Voltage, protection, export/import limits, transformer capacity, interconnection study and utility requirements are project-specific.
Performance basis No fixed yield, efficiency, availability, savings or return is promised before site data, technology selection and acceptance conditions are agreed.

Utilities and Site Interfaces

Construction and operation require access roads, crane logistics, foundations, drainage, auxiliary power, communications, earthing, lightning protection, substation space and maintenance facilities. Remote sites may require black-start and fuel-management interfaces.

Required Customer Engineering Inputs

Inputs include geospatial boundaries, wind measurements, terrain and obstacle data, geotechnical information, environmental restrictions, load interval data, grid code, single-line diagrams, outage history, diesel data, tariff and dispatch objectives.

Automation, Monitoring and Control

The EMS forecasts resources and load, manages battery state of charge, coordinates gensets or grid import, applies export and ramp limits and records energy balance. Local turbine, inverter and BESS protections remain autonomous during communication loss.

CAPEX and OPEX Drivers

CAPEX drivers include turbine class and transport, foundations, roads, crane access, grid distance, substation, storage duration, environmental mitigation and communications. OPEX depends on service strategy, spare parts, access, blade condition, major component replacement, land and grid charges.

Safety, Environmental and Compliance

Design covers turbine overspeed and braking, blade and ice hazards, working at height, lifting, lightning, battery fire where applicable, electrical arc risk, aviation marking and emergency access. Environmental work considers noise, shadow flicker, birds, bats, habitat and community constraints.

Lifecycle, Maintenance and Replacement Planning

Lifecycle scope includes condition monitoring, blade inspection and repair, gearbox or direct-drive maintenance, lubrication, transformer testing, BESS capacity tracking, inverter replacement and decommissioning plans.

Outputs and Acceptance Basis

Acceptance may include foundation and cable tests, turbine commissioning, protection and grid-code tests, EMS dispatch scenarios, BESS capacity test, communications failover, power-quality measurements, availability definitions and documentation handover. Energy yield remains subject to the agreed resource uncertainty.

Implementation and Commissioning

Delivery proceeds through resource campaign, feasibility and environmental screening, grid application, FEED, micrositing, detailed design, procurement, civil and electrical construction, staged energization, integrated controls testing and performance monitoring.

Project Evidence

Public evidence for this exact configuration has not been independently verified for this page. China Bente will identify applicable references during project evaluation; concept diagrams are engineering illustrations and are not presented as photographs of a completed client project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should wind be measured?

The required campaign depends on project scale, lender and permitting requirements, existing high-quality nearby data and uncertainty targets. The measurement and long-term-correction method must be documented.

Why combine wind with solar?

Their production profiles can be complementary, improving use of the grid connection or reducing backup energy, but the benefit must be proven with time-series data.

Is battery storage always necessary?

No. Storage is used when it solves a defined dispatch, power-quality, resilience or curtailment problem and its duration is based on that requirement.

Can a hybrid plant operate off-grid?

Yes when generation, storage, backup, black-start capability and controls are designed for island operation and the load-shedding strategy is agreed.

How are wake losses assessed?

Turbine locations, wind rose, terrain, rotor geometry and neighboring turbines are modeled, then uncertainty and operational curtailment are included in the energy assessment.

What grid studies are required?

Requirements vary, but may include load flow, short circuit, protection, harmonics, voltage control, fault ride-through, dynamic behavior and export-limit studies.

How is energy yield guaranteed?

A project-specific methodology distinguishes resource uncertainty, equipment power curve, losses, curtailment and availability. No fixed yield is stated before those terms are agreed.

What information starts the evaluation?

Site coordinates and boundary, wind data, electrical load, grid and genset information, terrain constraints, access, target operation mode and expansion plans are required.
